A Guide to the Reopening of Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World has announced their plans to reopen July 11th, but don’t expect the same experience you were used to visiting the parks. Temperature checks, required face masks, adjusted operating procedures, and more await you if you make the trip to Florida this summer. So, what’s to be expected?

How to Plan A Visit to a Reopened Walt Disney World

First, if you don’t have a valid annual pass, or have a pre-purchased package or ticket from when Walt Disney World shut down, you won’t be able to purchase a new one at this time.

The Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Reopen July 11th, 2020

Disney is requiring park reservations to visit once the parks reopen. You can make reservations using the Disney Park Pass System. Capacity will be limited.

  • Beginning June 22, 2020: Disney Resort and other select hotel Guests with valid theme park admission can make reservations.
  • Beginning June 26, 2020: Annual Passholders without a Resort stay can make reservations.
  • Beginning June 28, 2020: existing ticket holders can make reservations.

If you have a valid unused park admission or annual pass, you can make reservations to enter Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom for visit dates starting on July 11th, 2020. Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios reopen July 15th, 2020. Note that park hopping isn’t allowed at this time, Fastpass+ has been suspended, and Extra Magic Hours have been suspended as well.

At the time of this posting, Disney has extended previously purchased tickets to be used by December 15, 2020.

Face Coverings Will Be Required

Everyone two years of age and up will be required to wear face masks while in the park, except while eating. Temperature scans will be done before entering the parks as well and anyone with a 100.4 degree fever and above will not be allowed entry.

Most Disney Accommodations Are Still Closed

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground and the Disney Vacation Club properties are now open, but all Disney hotels are currently closed. Several of them will be used to house the NBA when they restart their season in late July, like the Grand Destino, Yacht Club, and Grand Floridian. Other notable dates include:

Overall

Disney is doing its best to open up its parks in a smart way on July 11th, though there will be lots of changes made after parks reopen as they adjust to life with guests again. It’s unclear how long the park’s reservation policy will last, but my hunch is as long as the pandemic continues.
